My goal today was to find a quilt top and liner to put in my new quilt frame. This top was made from 6 inch blocks that I machine stitched together. I had so much material at one time I just put together block quilts. This one is child themed. It is a twin size quilt. I may give it to my grandson when I complete it. Who knows?
I have been sick with the flu since my birthday. I finally got myself out of bed and decided to go treasure hunting. I did not find any estate sales worth going to. I went to a nearby town and found a nice resale shop. I found this quilt frame in a box. I have been wanting one like this for a long time.
I have been quilting since I was about 18 years old. Let me think that over. I really started making patchwork when I was about 10. My grandmother gave me some double knit scraps and taught me how to cut out squares. She had just moved into the world of sewing pant suits from double knit.
I also remember my first home and making my very first patchwork quilt. I made a flower garden quilt and handquilted around each individual octagon. I had no clue what I was doing and that king size quilt took me years to finish. My oldest daughter has it now.
I collect quilts and tops whenever I see a good deal. I can’t wait to get this frame up and going. I’ll keep you guys updated.
Hello all. I would like to introduce ya’ll to Petunia. She is not my favorite heifer today. Let me give you the full story.
I turned 60 on the 27th of December. I was really going to make this a stellar birthday. I made reservations at the best hotel in downtown Fort Worth. I also made dinner reservations at the best steakhouse that is across the street. I was ready to show my fiancée the finer side of living. I was going to take him to a birthday party that I was throwing for myself. I was going to show him the true me. LOL.
The morning of the 27th my neighbor called me. I heard the voice on the other end say, “Girl, you got a cow that is visiting me over here.” Dang that sucks. I have just invested in about 10 acres of new fence line in the back and the neighbor has really good fencing between me and her. Where did she get out? I’ll be over in a bit. I hopped on the four wheeler and went to checking fences. I could not find and fences down. I looked at my small herd and counted the girls. One bull and 7 girls, two donkeys and two wild horses. Everybody is there. I called the neighbor back and told her everybody was on my side. I also told her about my birthday plans. She is a very sweet neighbor.
I was getting my outfit ready for the date night when I got a call from my neighbor again. Petunia was visiting again. Dang, I had already washed my waist length hair and given it the upside down blow dryer treatment. I hopped back on the four wheeler and went to get my cow. I got her on my property and closed the gates. I was planning on putting her in the corral and then locking her in a time out until the next morning. That way I could enjoy the evening. Petunia would not get in that corral for anything. I chased her I cussed her I spanked her butt. Nothing. I sat down on the steps of my tack shack and cried for a few hours.
Then I got a call from my fiancée. He did not know how it happened but he was lost. He had to ask for my address to put in the GPS. He was running late. We still had and hour and a half before check in time at the hotel. He called a second time and told me he hit a blown out tire on the highway and damaged his car. I told him be safe and get here when you can.
He showed up, Petunia was still not in the coral. I was still teary eyed. He went to get Petunia. I opened the gate to the corral and she pranced right on in. We both agreed that there was too much negativity around the planned outing. I called and canceled the reservations. We went to the local cafe and got a good old chicken fried.
The next morning we both got on the four wheeler and found the place where Petunia might have escaped. We repaired the fence together and enjoyed picking up some pecans along the way. I really showed that fiancée of mine a good time. He got to see the real me, nothing fancy, just an old lady loving life on her farm.
I think the fiancée is a keeper but I am not sure about Petunia. She may be my next chicken fried.
Today is a beautiful day. I spent the morning searching for a cow that supposedly has been roaming the neighborhood. I will share more on that story later. So the jest of it is that I was down in the back 40 of the place here on the four wheeler. I love the four wheeler. I noticed that the pecan trees are loaded with pecans this year. I bake often and pecans are a mainstay in the southern baking. The Texas state tree is the pecan. I must have the bulk of the State’s pecans on my place. I am truly blessed.
I noticed that I did not have a bag to put my pecans in. The other day I kept ripping my bag and my pecans would fall out. This time I did not even have a bag. I did then next best thing. I tied my oversized T shirt in a know in my bra and made a type of pocket in the front of the shirt. That worked. I am glad no one saw me. There I was, a 60 year old woman, riding a four wheeler with a mid drift. LOL.
Today I went down the lane of my place and decided to pick some pecans. I am blessed to live on a small amount of acreage and the backside of the property is covered in pecan trees. I have been on vacation this week and the cabin fever has set in. I hopped on that four wheeler and took off down the trail to the back of the property.
I took two Dollar General store bags with me. I found a tree that had some pretty small pecans. I started filling my bag and then I realized that there was a whole in my sack. I tied the sack where the hole was. Then I started putting pecans back in the sack. I was brushing against some briars as I was picking the pecans. I then realized that the thorns were tearing holes in the bag.
I went further down the lane and came to a bigger tree. I got off the four wheeler and went to look for more pecans. I hit the mother load. I was picking up the pecans and everywhere I turned there were more. I kept trying to pick them up and more would show up on the ground. Guess what. There was another hole in my bag. I got the second bag out of my pocket and filled about half a bag full.
All in all I was glad to get out of the house and go enjoy the day. The picture of the squirrel on top of a nut is to show how nutty I can be. I found this treasure on my antique outing this weekend. He was a steal. He was in a box full of random items that I got for $5.00.
He also reminds me of how my brain works…pecan picking… Look, there’s a squirrel.
I have just had a great day. I have spent the day Christmas shopping. I am not really the shopping type of person. I only shop for Christmas in one day at the Wal Mart. If I can not get it at Wal mart it is just not meant to be gotten.
I take that back, I do go to estate sales during the year. I make a purchase if I find something that I think my people would enjoy. They do get some mighty strange gifts sometimes.
Today’s I started the day with an estate sale. I dug around in a garage that was covered with boxes. The man in charge told me not to worry about digging. He would only charge me $5.00 a box. I grabbed three and a box of rocks for free. The rocks were fossils and were in an interesting old suitcase I have an artsy crafts idea for.
Next I went to the Wal Mart and got my little Christmas list purchases made. I needed to buy some NBA sports cards for my fella. I had to go to three different stores before I found them. I called my daughter about my shopping excursion and she told me to go to the pawn shop and buy some baseball cards they had for $10 for a long box. By the time I got there they already had sold them.
I asked them what else they had for sale that was interesting. They almost sold me a 3D printer. I was tempted but could not really decide what I would do with it. I asked if they had a blue ray remote. They had a universal remote for $6.00. I bought that sucker.
I have been without watching my movies for about three years now because I lost that stupid remote. It’s like a whole new word is opened up. I love watching movies.
There is a saying in the country that you are so secluded that you can go out on your own front porch naked and no one cares. I have not ever gone out on my porch naked but I have had a few compromising incidents that I am proud no one saw. I just want to give my neighbors some advice. Do not go out on your porch naked if you do not have trees in your yard. Here is the funny story of the day.
This morning I was getting out of my pick up truck to get the mail out of the box. The mail box is on the other side of the road across the street from my entrance to my place. I have to put the truck in park, open the door, climb out using the side runner bars to steady myself getting out, and then slide my butt down the high seat. I have what I call a big girl truck.
I got out of the truck and started walking towards the mailbox. I am not gonna say which neighbor it was that I caught sight of. I would not want them to be embarrassed if they ever read this. The neighbor had apparently ran out to the car for something. It was one of those moments that you think Did I really just see a naked butt fly into the open door. I took a double take and sure enough, it was a naked butt flying across the yard.
I laughed all morning on that one. I am still smiling as I am writing this.
Take note, Make sure you have good trees or shrubs in your yard before you go streaking across the yard.
I am spending my vacation time going through my house and organizing my fine (LOL) treasures. I had an old bedroom that My deceased husband and I shared. I doubt if I will ever be able to sleep there again. So now it will be a toy room. I do collect some older style toys from my childhood. The other day I found some TinkerToys. They were my favorite. I only have one corner of the room organized enough to show you guys. I will keep you updated as my progress continues. Collecting is lots of fun. I would like for my grandchildren to be able to come in and enjoy seeing some toys from the past. It will be a fun place for them to stay overnight.
Just wanted to give you guys an updated view of my toy room. I have added Trolls, Pez Dispensers and a box of vintage TinkerToys.
This room, along with the rest of my house and farm, is a constant work in progress.
Sometime farm work is pretty hard. I am a strong independent woman and it kills me to ask for help. Today was one of those days. I am clearing out an old room. It is the room my deceased husband and I shared. I have not been in there for years. Today I decided to get rid of the bed and mattress. I t is a great big king size bed .
I started by washing all the linens. Then I started to take apart the bed to possible resale. The mattress needs to be tossed. I went to put it in the bed of my pickup and that was just not going to happen. I called a young man that I work with. He is about 6 foot 6 inches tall. He has also worked as a prison guard. He is a good person to have on your side.
He came over and helped me get the job done. I am very grateful to him and gave him a little cash. It is good to have people on your side.
Have I told you guys how much I love food? I love food. I am a certified food scientist with the American Institute of Baking. I took a two year course in Food Science and Technology. I have worked in the food and dairy manufacturing industry for many years of my career. I have had a license to run a cottage industry out of my home so I may bake for others. I just love food.
Here is a picture of my favorite breakfast. It is a simple breakfast and pretty healthy. It is quick oats, half and half, butter, honey pecan butter (found in the Hill Country in the Great State of Texas) and blueberries. This is a good way to start my morning.
